Dear Mr. Penny,
As you know, Kevin and I have been around the parenting road for
many years. Rebecca now being 18, Kyle 17 and Ryan at 10, we
feel that we have covered all the stages of childhood. Yet as
parents, we learned a long time ago that you never stop needing
the help and support of others.
This brings me to sharing a story with you.
Several weeks ago Kevin and I were having a conversation with
Kyle. He was driving to a friend’s house for an all night
birthday party. He often does this and we don’t mind because he
has a very nice group of friends. As he was getting ready to go
we reminded him to use good judgment and behave. At this point,
he opened up and told us that more than likely there would be
alcohol at the party. This of course came as a shock to us to
think that he could be drinking. Yet as Kyle often does, he
surprised us by telling us that he never drinks at these parties
because he feels he needs to keep and eye on everyone else. When
questioned about these types of situations he told us that he’s
17 and in High School and that most often than not alcohol is
available at parties.
He proceeded to explain, that we had nothing to worry about
because he knows how to behave and had no desire to drink
without our knowledge. Nor was he ever going to go against his
Tae Kwon Do promise to have respect, honor, integrity and self
control in his actions. This Sir, we owe to you, to the time and
energy that you spend on our children. Kevin and I have very
high expectations for the people around us that touch the lives
of our children. I am pleased to know that Kyle has looked to
you as a mentor and taken his commitment to Tae Kwon Do as a
guide through these very difficult and often tempting teenage
years. We don’t know if the day will come when Kyle gives in to
temptation, however, we take comfort in knowing that he is
better prepared and has higher expectations of himself than most
young men do at his age.
We thank you for being part of our support system. We are
honored that you take such an active part in teaching our
children by example through the Way of Martial Arts. Raising a
child is not an easy task, raising a teenager sometimes seems
impossible. Having instructors, mentors and friends like you and
your school to reaffirm and augment our family values is truly
priceless.
Most respectfully,
Haydee
